UNIT 12 MAPA ME

My idea for 'Mapa me' is to take my body structure and shape and make a figure that has openings and actions mission to see into it. Inside and outside will be my map in sections which will be about places I like to go in the world. I chose this topic as it is very important to me and something I think about on a daily basis.

My target audience for this current unit that I am doing is for young females. The reason due to why I am aiming this for young females is because there are many females that would like to travel to places but have no information about it. So through this unit I will research into the culture and diversity into the countries.

I will represent the map with the use of colour and shape in different sizes and a range of font. I will incorporate photography work into the 3D piece such as distorted photos or an original map into the body of the female frame. I am hoping my 3D model will be able to stand up by itself without any support needed.

The artists and sculptures I will focus on are such as Holly Lentz, Kendra Haste and Nikki Taylor as they relate to the theme I have and I can learn skills from them such as how to structure the female frame and the colours they use incorporated into their work. Holy lentz has a particular style that I am very interested in and find to be beautiful.

Evaluation

I found this project exciting at the begging because I had so many ideas coming through at once when I heard we could design a map about anything we want however we want to represent it.

Looking back at my statement of intent I had said that I wanted to create a figure that had openings and sections missing to see into. I successfully did that and created a female body out of metal that you can see into.

I also said that I wanted my map to be about places I like to go in the world that are important to me. I successfully created 4 countries that all had meaning to me. However I felt that I put so much effort and energy into the making of the metal body and the practical work that I didn't focus enough on the countries themselves or the target audience.

As the weeks went by and the project became detailed I started to struggle with the concept of the audience. From the start of this project the map was a very personal thing to each person so I was u sure on how I could link it to a particular audience. I thought I could link it with young females who'd want to travel to these places but don't know much about the country itself.

I am so happy with my frame and the layer of wool on top that makes an interesting design. However I am still not 100% happy with the actually map and the countries on the inside. I still feel that it is missing something or some colour. When you look at each country you can see the makeup of it. The culture and the iconic items that represent each place, e.g elephants and Buddhas in Thailand and statues and the Parthenon in Greece.

It is a very visual and textured piece of work there is no writing or facts to view unless you view my book first. But you can see when you look into the frame, England is placed in the area where the heart would be and the other countries represent other organs connect by the ribbon, which would resemble the veins connecting them together. The metal frame represents my skeleton and the cream coloured wool represents my skin.

In conclusion I am happy with this unit of work and if I was to do this project again there would be a few little things I would change to do with my practical work and what I choose to research into. I learnt new techniques and skills such as acetone transfers and graphic photogrammetry which I will contemplate using in the future for my work. I found new artists which I will keep up to date with as they create new sculptures and used my time well and evenly in each lesson to complete this project on time.
